The Intergalatic Wanderer

About This Photograph

This globular star cluster almost lives up to its name. It is so far away — more than 250,000 light years — that it was first believed to not be gravitationally bound to our galaxy. Further observations, however, showed that it is indeed associated with our galaxy, albeit in an unusual orbit.
